President: Cayetano E. Barrera, M.D., Physician, Family Practice of Medicine for 36 years. Has lived in McAllen for 34 years. Devotee of Texas history. B.A. (1959) Baylor University; M.D. (1963) University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Served in the U.S. Army (1966-1968) as a Captain in the Medical Corps in Vietnam. President of UTPA Historical Collection Advisory Committee for 15 years, member for 25 years. Past President (1975) of the McAllen International Museum. President (1983) of the Rio Grande Boy Scout Council. Board member (1997) of the Hidalgo County Historical Museum, Edinburg. Board of Directors member (1999 to the present) of the McAllen Economic Development Council. Been instrumental in naming several area schools after Tejano pioneers. Dr. Barrera is a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Practice, and the Hidalgo/Starr County Medical Society. Chairman of the Board (2000 to the present), Rio State Bank, McAllen.

Vice President: Andrés Tijerina, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History at Austin Community College. Lives in Austin, Texas. B.A. (1967) in Modern Languages from Texas A&M University; M.A. (1973) in History from Texas Tech University and a Ph.D. (1977) in U.S. History from the UT at Austin. Dr. Tijerina has taught at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Texas Tech, and the University of Texas at Austin and San Antonio. He has served as Executive Director of the Texas Good Neighbor Commission and a group manager for Motorola, Inc. Among his published works are the award-winning books: "Tejanos and Texas Under the Mexican Flag", and "Tejano Empire: Life on the South Texas Ranchos", published by Texas A&M University Press; he co-edited "El Mesquite", originally written in 1935 by Elena Zamora O'Shea; pioneered publishing a full-length e-book written by Mr. Andrés Saenz, entitled "Early Tejano ranching in Duval County"; and the publication of his Vietnam Was memories in the final volume of the Time-Life Books series "The Vietnam Experience. Dr. Tijerina received the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross, retired as a Major of the U.S. Air Force, where he served as the Liaison Officer for the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He has also published works in the southwestern Historical Quarterly and the American Historical Review. He is a member and a fellow of the Texas State Historical Association and a member of the American Historical Association.

Vice President: Homero Vera, Journalist and Historical Researcher. He is founder, editor and has published the monthly magazine "El Mesteño", dedicated to articles on the history of South Texas since 1997. He has lived in Premont, Texas for the past 44 years. Mr. Vera attended Texas A&M University at Kingsville (1971-1974) and currently works part-time in their archives. Chairman of the Jim Wells County Historical Commission (2001-2003). His intimate knowledge of the history of South Texas, historical locations and sources, and his intense interest in this project have been invaluable.

Vice President: Renato Ramirez, President and CEO of the International Bank of Commerce in Zapata, Texas with branches in Roma and Rio Grande City, was born in Zapata and has lived there for the past 27 years. Member of the senior management committee of International Bancshares Corporation. Bachelor's of Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M (1961), MBA (1966) from University of Texas, and Ph.D. (ABD) (1970) at the University of Tennessee. First Lieutenant U.S. Army, Professor of Business Administration at Univ. Of Tenn., Louisiana State University, and Laredo State University. Philanthropic supporter of the Zapata Boys and Girls Club, the Casa Hogar Orphanage in Cd. Mier, the Sacred Heart Orphanage in Laredo, the Zapata County Fair, the youth of Zapata through a scholarship program, the National Hispanic Institute and the Tejano Monument, Inc. Constructed and operated the Los Ebanos Golf Course in Zapata. Past President of the Boys and Girls Club, of Zapata County Fair, of Los Ebanos Golf Course, Inc., and chairman of several public service boards.

Secretary-Treasurer: Richard Sanchez, Chief of Staff for State Representative Ismael "Kino" Flores from Palmview, who authored House Resolution (HCR 38) to install the monument. Mr. Sanchez managed the Resolution through the legislative process. Received his B.A. (1987) from the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently enrolled in the Certified Public Manager Program in Southwest Texas State University and expects to get his certification in the fall of 2002. Serves in the Texas State Guard. He was President (1990) of the Mexican/American Comptroller's Employees' Association; Treasurer (1993) of the South Austin Tejano Democrats; Vice-President (1994) of the Capitol City Young Democrats and Board member (1994-1995) of the South Austin Tejano Democrats. He was the person first approached to determine whether Representative Flores would author such a resolution. Mr. Sanchez has exceptional organizational and analytical skills and his passion for the history of the Hispanic culture are an asset to the project. He continues to be Representative Flores' right-hand man in this endeavor. The contacts he has developed in and around the State Capitol should prove invaluable in terms of raising project funds.
